The Innovation Process

Featured Program
FormulatE: Electric Vehicle Lesson Plans

Drive curiosity, spark innovation — empower the next
generation with hands-on EV education.

FormulatE is a dynamic curriculum designed to bring the world of electric vehicles (EVs) into the classroom. Curriculum is built for high school classrooms and adaptable to grades 5-8 (review materials to determine suitability). These standards-aligned lesson plans blends physics, engineering, environmental science, and real-world problem solving. Whether students are future engineers or just EV-curious, FormulatE makes complex concepts accessible, engaging, and exciting. FormulatE Complements chemistry, physics, math, engineering and design classes.

Explore Curriculum Modules

Module 1: EV 101
Introduces EV types, history, and development; includes simulations, cost-benefit analysis, and student proposals on EV adoption. For HS, adaptable to grades 5–8. Can be used as a stand-alone unit. Centered on science concepts – Complements history and economics. Download >
Module 2: Parts & Systems
Covers motors, batteries, controllers, inverters, and power electronics through hands-on activities, simulations, and drawing tasks. Ends with a student-created EV diagram. For HS, adaptable to 6-8 grade advanced students. Stand-alone unit. Complements math, history, and economics. Download >
Module 3: Battery Basics
Students build simple batteries, measure voltage, explore battery types, management systems, and charging levels via hands-on labs and guided activities. Can be stand-alone. For HS, adaptable to grades 4–8. Complements Chem, Physics, Env Sci. Download >
Module 4: Motors & Drives
Covers electromagnetism, AC/DC motors, inverters, and regenerative braking. Includes electromagnet-building, math analysis, motor comparisons, and beginner CAD work. Not stand-alone; complete Modules 1–3 first. For HS. Complements Physics, Engineering, Env Sci. Download >
Module 5: Electronics
Explores inverters, rectifiers, AC/DC conversions, regenerative braking, and heat transfer with labs, simulations, and Tinkercad. Includes wireless charging. Advanced content; best for students reading at grade 9+ level. Download >
Module 6: Dynamics/Control
Introduces motion, acceleration, braking, and control systems with simulations, videos, and group design of regenerative braking. For HS, adaptable to 6–8 grade advanced students. Complements Physics, Engineering, Computer Sci. Download >
Module 7: Charging
Explores EV charging types, speeds, connector types, and V2G tech. Includes virtual field trip, grid impact analysis, and Smart Grid concepts. Stand-alone unit for HS, adaptable to 6–8 grade advanced students. Complements Physics, Engineering, Env Sci. Download >
Module 8: Future of EVs
Students research self-driving, V2X, and EV trends. The final project uses Siemens software to design a new EV feature. Not stand-alone; complete prior modules first for best results. Complements Engineering, Economics, Computer Sci. Download >
Each module puts students in the driver’s seat of innovation. From exploring how lithium-ion batteries work to designing their own sustainable vehicle models, learners engage with practical experiments, group challenges, and interactive simulations. The lessons are flexible enough to adapt to your classroom’s needs—whether you’re running a semester-long program or looking for a STEM week highlight.
Created in collaboration with EV engineers and educators, FormulatE is more than a lesson plan—it’s a launchpad. Inspire your students to think critically about the future of transportation, energy, and sustainability. With real-world connections and hands-on learning at its core, FormulatE helps today’s students become tomorrow’s problem solvers.
